ATM fraud is on the rise, and one of the most common tactics criminals use is ATM skimming. ATM skimmers are devices placed on legitimate machines to steal card information and PIN numbers. At Chelsea Employees FCU, your financial security is our top priority, so we want to equip you with the knowledge to identify and avoid these threats.

What is an ATM Skimmer?

An ATM skimmer is a small device installed over the real card reader of an ATM, gas pump, or other point-of-sale terminal. When you insert your card, the skimmer captures the information stored on the magnetic stripe. Often, criminals also install hidden cameras or fake keypads to record your PIN.

How to Spot an ATM Skimmer

Here are some telltale signs that an ATM may have been compromised:

  1. Loose or Bulky Card Reader – If the card slot appears loose, misaligned, or sticks out more than usual, it could be a skimmer attached over the original reader.
  2. Unusual Keypad – A fake keypad may be placed over the real one to capture keystrokes. If the buttons feel stiff, hard to press, or appear raised, something may be off.
  3. Hidden Cameras – Criminals sometimes place tiny cameras near the ATM to record your PIN. Look for unusual objects, small holes, or anything that appears out of place around the keypad.
  4. Fake Front Panels – Some skimmers are part of a larger fake ATM front, covering legitimate parts of the machine. If any part of the ATM looks different from usual, be cautious.
  5. Unusual Instructions – If a machine instructs you to enter your PIN multiple times or asks for additional information, it could be compromised.
  6. Wiggle Test – Before inserting your card, gently tug on the card reader and keypad. Skimmers are often loosely attached and may come off or shift when pulled.
  7. Check for Tamper-Evident Stickers – Many ATMs have security seals. If the seal is broken or appears tampered with, avoid using the machine.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Use ATMs in Well-Lit, Secure Areas – Criminals are more likely to target isolated or dimly lit ATMs.
  • Cover Your Hand When Entering Your PIN – Even if a skimmer is present, blocking your PIN from hidden cameras can prevent thieves from accessing your account.
  • Monitor Your Accounts Regularly – Set up account alerts with Chelsea Employees FCU to notify you of suspicious transactions.
  • Use Contactless Payments – Whenever possible, opt for contactless transactions, which eliminate the risk of skimming.
  • Report Suspicious ATMs – If you notice something unusual, report it to the bank or ATM operator immediately.

Your security is important to us at Chelsea Employees FCU. By staying alert and knowing what to look for, you can protect yourself from ATM fraud. If you ever suspect fraudulent activity on your account, contact us immediately so we can assist you in safeguarding your finances.

Stay safe and secure!
